WATERLOO -- One of Canada's most iconic restaurants is coming back home.
McDonald's has announced that its iconic restaurant is opening in Newington, under new ownership.
The Newington location will be a franchise of the same restaurant that opened in May 2016 in Wellington under the ownership of Calgary-based franchisee, McDonald’s Canada Ltd.
McDonald's is now owned by private equity investment firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, which also owns restaurants in the U.S. and the UK.
This Newington location will have a maximum capacity of 1,200 seats. A spokesperson for McDonald’s Canada said the restaurant will serve the same menu as the Wellington McDonald’s.
When the restaurant opens it will be the company’s largest Newington location, and the fourth-largest franchise in Canada.
According to its website, the Newington McDonald’s will be located at 112 Somerset Ave. NW. The restaurant will serve the same menu as the Wellington McDonald’s restaurant, and is expected to open in December.
According to the McDonald’s Canada website, the Wellington McDonald’s is expected to close in the fall of 2018. The restaurant’s last day of operation is March 31.
Clayton, Dubilier & Rice manages five McDonald’s restaurants in Newington.
